Academics

Education at Cove is based on an academic philosophy rooted in timeless Biblical truth and shaped by a vision for the whole child. We believe that the way children learn should reflect both the glory of God and the nature of the child. Drawing from the Classical tradition, the insights of Charlotte Mason, and the unique strengths of a homeschool hybrid model, our approach honors the dignity of each learner while guiding them toward truth, beauty, and virtue.

Here is the heart behind how and why we teach.

  • We seek to inspire joyful, lifelong learning by giving our children the good, true, and beautiful ideas they are worthy of receiving. We especially value the Classical emphasis on excellence in writing, reasoning, and speaking.

Education is about developing a vision of goodness and virtue, and then—most importantly—bringing that knowledge to bear on actual conduct... Right thinking is an important step toward that end, but knowledge alone without conscience or virtue was never an object. Only within the past several generations has education become entirely divorced from moral development, and we see the results around us every day.

This commitment to uniting intellectual and moral formation guides our work here at Cove.

  • We embrace Charlotte Mason’s approach to honor each child as a person, cultivating habits of attention and best effort.

Charlotte Mason, a 19th-century British educator, offered profound insights into the nature of the child, both at school and within the family. One of her most transformative contributions was the emphasis on forming habits—particularly attention and best effort—from the earliest years.

Her view was that best effort was never about gold stars or fear of shame, but about the dignity of doing one’s work whole-heartedly. This approach emphasizes attentiveness as a path to deep understanding and retention, versus rote memorization.

  • We embrace a homeschool hybrid model that strengthens family connections, nurtures flexible learning, and inspires engagement with the wider world.

The heart of hybrid education is time—real time with children that cannot be replaced. These homeschool days become cherished memories that are cemented in children’s hearts and minds. The days spent in community at school, growing alongside teachers and peers, are equally valuable.

A homeschool hybrid allows parents to individualize learning for their children by moving at a child’s unique pace and nurturing their needs and passions in a way only a parent can offer.

Cove families are never alone; our support network ensures resources, encouragement, and practical help in this journey.

The question is not — how much does the youth know? when he has finished his education — but how much does he care? and about how many orders of things does he care? In fact, how large is the room in which he finds his feet set? and, therefore, how full is the life he has before him?
